Michael Higgs, manager of the Cave Hill Heritage Foundation in Louisville, Kentucky and president of the Kentucky Cemetery Association, recently sat down with CemeteryVision.com for a wide-ranging conversation, starting with how he found his way to the profession more than 20 years ago as a security guard … and never left.

He also shares details about the rich history of Cave Hill Cemetery, which dates to 1848 and has about 142,000 interments across 300 acres, featuring notable residents like boxer Muhammad Ali and KFC founder Col. Harland Sanders.

In the interview, Higgs notes that the foundation’s mission is to preserve the cemetery’s historic monuments, arboricultural setting and provide educational programs, while relying on a small team with support from volunteers and corporate sponsors.

He also talks about his leadership roles in both the Kentucky Cemetery Association and as president-elect of the Southern Cemetery Cremation Funeral Association.
